The new iteration of Doctor Who since Russell T. Davies has been in turmoil among fans and returned to the showrunner position. The 60th Anniversary specials heralding the return of David Tennant ended in a whimper in the ratings amidst fans scratching their heads at the direction of the show as the reins were passed to Ncuti Gatwa. Now, matters might get worse as it appears Doctor Who is selling its soul to Disney with its new contract.
Troubles started for the show from the moment the 60th Anniversary Special aired, when Russell T. Davies, writer, and showrunner, put a proverbial middle finger up at fans by introducing a new “Rose,” but this time a trans man pretending to be a woman. If audiences didn’t accept this new character, the dialogue beat the audience over the head with redundant and patronizing dialogue as characters repeatedly referred to the guy as Donna Noble’s “beautiful daughter” repeatedly.
Russell T. Davies further riled fans against this incarnation of the show, in an interview with the Radio Times, stating that the new season will upset fans and “annoy people.” He made it clear he is intentionally causing outrage with what fans consider poor writing choices for future Doctor Who episodes.
Both Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson gave interviews in the late fall of 2023 stating that Doctor Who would lean heavily into leftist identity politics over the upcoming season, and with poor ratings and reviews of the Christmas Special, The Church On Ruby Road, which also pushed the trans agenda further with a transgender singer featured in the episode. Fans also learned that Millie Gibson, who plays Ruby Sunday, is set to exit the show before the first episode of the new series even airs.
Many have speculated that making the Doctor black and seemingly gay with Ncuti Gatwa was a decision made by Disney for American audiences. The show turning from sci-fi to fantasy, which Russell T. Davies has promised, also seems like lazy American writing which would appeal to the Disney demographic. However, Doctor Who is doing more which is upsetting British fans of the beloved show.
The new series of Doctor Who with Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson is set to air on May 10th. Strangely, the BBC decided to release the episode at 7 PM EST, a time most Brits are asleep and would be best for primetime American audiences.
With the recent partnership with Disney+ releasing the show, it seems like the BBC is making the move to bow to its American partners and make Doctor Who more American-centric in the move.
It seems this is the Disney Doctor Who era, after all, with the wokeness, the time slots, and everything becoming much more of an American leftist way of thinking. One wonders what other strings Disney might be pulling to further torpedo the show?
