Paramount Pictures has made a spine-chilling announcement sure to thrill horror-comedy fans everywhere: a reboot of the popular Scary Movie franchise is officially in the works with the involvement of Neal H. Moritz. The news, unveiled at CinemaCon, promises a resurrection of the series, which first emerged on the scene in 2000 under the direction of Keenen Ivory Wayans. With the resurgence of horror cinema’s popularity, it seems only fitting for Scary Movie to rise from the grave and deliver its signature blend of satire and scares once again.

Set to commence production in the fall of 2024 and slated for a 2025 release, this new instalment is a collaborative effort between Paramount, Miramax, and renowned producer Neal H. Moritz, best known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise. Scary Movie is going into production by Neal H. Moritz in the fall of 2024, and should hit theatres in 2025.” With a rich history of lampooning horror classics like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, the Scary Movie series has become a popular staple in the realm of horror spoofs.

While details about the cast and crew remain shrouded in mystery, fans eagerly await news about whether franchise favourites Anna Faris and Regina Hall will reprise their iconic roles. Their absence from the fifth film, released in 2013, left a void that many hope will be filled in this exciting reboot. Fans would no doubt be happy to see Faris and Hall return for a Scary Movie reboot from Neal H. Moritz, especially after nearly two decades and with all the more films to make fun of that have been released since then.

Miramax’s involvement in financing the project, alongside Paramount’s distribution, and production by Neal H. Moritz underscores the studio’s confidence in the enduring appeal of the Scary Movie brand. This partnership marks a new chapter for the indie label, particularly under the leadership of CEO Jonathan Glickman, who brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at MGM. Scary Movie is also being made as part of the Paramount’s first look partnership with Miramax, the studio behind the film franchise.

As horror cinema continues to evolve and captivate audiences worldwide, there’s no shortage of material for Neal H. Moritz’ Scary Movie to sink its teeth into. From recent box office hits like Five Nights at Freddy’s and Smile to upcoming releases such as M3GAN, the genre landscape offers a rich well of tropes and trends ripe for parody. So there’s a lot of new material for the Scary Movie team to parody.

Horror is getting attention in Hollywood because the genre is cheaper to make, a more reliable revenue generator.

As pointed out by many researchers, the horror genre tends to have upticks during societal low points.
