Marvel Studios is undergoing significant restructuring, with the intent being to focus on quality over quantity in its upcoming MCU and Disney projects. This shift follows concerns over the studio’s expansion into television content and increased movie output. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, confirmed a key change to the MCU’s development process, stating that they are now adopting a more traditional studio approach, developing more projects than they will ultimately produce.
Winderbaum emphasised the need to be more judicious in their choices, claiming that the world has shifted and necessitated a reassessment of their creative strategies. He stated, “We have a new system behind the scenes at Marvel Studios… We’re more like a traditional studio now, we’re developing more than we actually will produce.” This represents a notable departure from Marvel Studios’ previous strategy, where virtually every project developed with story and script work would be filmed and released.

CEO Bob Iger’s push for quality over quantity reflects a desire to return Marvel Studios to its former glory. The onslaught of Disney+ content, while initially ambitious, failed to maintain viewer interest, leading to a reevaluation of priorities. With 2024 designated as a rebuilding year, Marvel aims to re-engage fans and draw back general audiences by focusing on foundational heroes like Deadpool and Wolverine. Unfortunately for Marvel, Disney and MCU fans, wokeness will stay.
In discussing the evolving landscape of content creation, Winderbaum mentioned, “Certainly the world has shifted. The original idea was that we can create whatever we wanted to launch Disney+ and to have a home for new Marvel ideas to take place. And now we do have to be a little bit more judicious with our choices.” This highlights the studio’s recognition of the need to adapt to changing audience preferences and market dynamics. However, Marvel and Disney’s refusal to even consider the voices of fans and their insistence on ticking off DEI check boxes, will ultimately prove their new strategy to be futile.
The studio’s pivot to streaming in 2018, spearheaded by Bob Iger, led to accelerated development on numerous shows for Disney+. While initial performance was strong, the streaming landscape shifted in 2022, prompting a reevaluation of production strategies.
Looking ahead, Marvel Studios remains optimistic about its adjustments and is drawing inspiration from successful series like Loki. Despite challenges, the studio is committed to remaining a propaganda leader in the entertainment industry. As Winderbaum reiterated, “The characters are still at the core of everything we do… Creating entertaining, fun-to-watch characters that can teach empathy and hold a mirror up to the audience and become an emotional conduit for people, that’s still our guiding principle.” This commitment underscores Marvel’s dedication to its core value of woke messaging.

I have to disagree with Razorfist on this one.
It’s not superhero fatigue. People have loved superpowered champions for at least the last three thousand years.
It’s woke fatigue. Crappy consumer writing fatigue. Marvel did the same thing with superheroes that the studios did with ‘spaghetti westerns’ back in the day… overexposure to crappy, trite, and preachy writing.
Good superhero movies are not popular because there have BEEN no good superhero movies since Disney bought Marvel. But I WRITE superhero books, and they are more popular than ever.
