Scott Snyder Rumored To Helm New Absolute DC, An Ultimate Marvel-Style Universe

Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man by Jonathan Hickman has been one of the few bright spots in the comic book industry after the first couple of issues saw people lining up at comic shops to purchase the book featuring Peter Parker, married to Mary Jane and children. It seems like a new formula of “give the fans what they want” might be something successful. However, it would require Marvel and DC to really get their acts together, and DC Comics is currently showing that copying Marvel is what they want to do again with Absolute DC from Scott Snyder.

Rumors have swirled for a long time about DC Comics making their own Ultimate Universe. They tried once in the past to emulate what Marvel was doing with the original fan-favorite Ultimate runs by making their All-Star line of comics, which had one of the best Superman stories of all time in All-Star Superman, but the line failed to catch fire the way Marvel’s did, leaving DC Comics in its doldrums of endless line-wide reboots.

Now, Bleeding Cool has reported that Scott Snyder will be helming DC Comics new attempt at creating an Ultimate Universe with Absolute DC or Absolute Comics. As DC Comics already has an Absolute line with oversized comic editions, it seems a good brand name for what they’re doing.

This is the second initiative DC Comics has been late to the party copying Marvel on over the last few years, as they also recently announced DC’s Finest, which is a line similar to Marvel’s Epic Collections with thick trade paperbacks of their classic material.

Rumors are that creators will have complete control over their comics to reimagine superheroes the way they want without interference from the mainline DC Comics. This Absolute DC is supposed to stem from Mark Waid’s forthcoming summer event, Absolute Power, which will presumably launch the universe.

Scott Snyder is attached to the project, and will presumably write Batman, as he’s been acclaimed for his work on the main universe Batman title. Thinking Critical pointed out in his video on the topic that Scott Snyder said he would never work on Batman again, but we will see if that statement holds water as DC Comics appears to be more and more desperate to try to generate sales.

Fans are hoping that even with some planned changes to classic characters, DC Comics will do honor to the original visions of their beloved heroes, as both DC and Marvel Comics seem to have been replacing characters with D.E.I. knockoffs at alarming rates in recent years.

Regardless, DC Comics is again late in creating a streamlined universe. Will this one go well, or will it be another botched initiative like New 52 and Dawn of DC? Only time will tell.

LOL Scott Snyder sucks. I actually lost all interest in Batman, BATMAN, after his lame “Year 0” which needlessly discarded the timeless “Year 1” for a steamy pile of unmemorable dreck. Oh, then he changed the Joker from iconic villain to goofy slasher film cheese when he “cut off his face.”

I don’t care how well his books sold at the time, his creative vision SUCKS and he belongs no where near classic legacy characters.

They will not do what they want. They would be canceled from the industry.
