In recent years, Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, has been at the center of controversy surrounding Disney’s handling of the Star Wars franchise. Fans and commentators have expressed their dissatisfaction with the creative direction of the series, often pointing the finger at Kennedy’s leadership. However, a recent report claims that the perception of Kennedy’s role in these decisions may not be entirely accurate.
According to Matthew Belloni, who spoke on The Town podcast, sources have claimed that Kennedy is not the driving force behind the controversial decisions in the Star Wars universe.
Belloni stated, “Kathleen Kennedy is not… That whole ‘South Park’ thing was… It was funny, but it wasn’t accurate. She kind of has to be convinced, from everything I’ve been told, she kind of has to be convinced to do this stuff.” This implies that others within the company may be pushing certain agendas, and Kennedy is either not stopping them or is unaware of their influence.

This revelation raises questions about Kennedy’s leadership and accountability. If these controversial elements are indeed creeping into the Star Wars franchise without her knowledge or approval, it suggests a lack of oversight and control. The prequel movies, along with series like Ahsoka, The Mandalorian season 3, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, all exhibit signs of these issues, yet the report seems to suggest that Kennedy is not directly responsible.
Looking ahead, the upcoming series The Acolyte has already generated significant online commentary and memes, with many expressing skepticism about its direction.
Star Dafne Keen has even compared a lightsaber duel in the series to the iconic Darth Maul fight from The Phantom Menace, which some fans argue is over-choreographed and lacks the emotional weight of the Vader vs. Luke battles.
“We want to top the Darth Maul fight – the most iconic fight, I think, in the ‘Star Wars’ cinematic universe. It’s such an amazing fight and we were all so excited about the saber fights. There’s such a skill and a craft to it that it feels so OG ‘Star Wars’ and feels so impressive when you see it as a viewer.”
As Disney continues to expand the Star Wars universe, they have announced numerous projects in development, including three films set for release between 2025 and 2027. One of these is expected to be Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu, while another will see the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker in a post-sequel trilogy movie.
The third film, directed by Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny’s James Mangold, will explore the origins of the Force and the Dawn of the Jedi, taking place even earlier than the current High Republic initiative and The Acolyte series.
James Mangold is slated to be the replacement for the Kennedy; so these “not woke” reports could be serving both Mangold (giving him a clean slate to work out his own vision) and Kennedy (giving her a out for any blowback failures that come from her tenure). It’s also cynically possible that having a male counterpart implement Kennedy’s radical feminist changes could be easy on the public perception; especially with a complete reboot of Star Wars lore on the horizon.
While some reports suggest that Kennedy may not be directly responsible for the divisive elements in recent projects, her leadership and accountability are still called into question, as is the future of Star Wars.
