Jordan Peele, director of Get Out and Nope, is delving into a revisionist documentary series with an upcoming project he promises will dismantle the “whitewashed portrayal of cowboys in American mythology” Jordan Peele wants to rewrite the history of the Wild West. Produced under his Monkeypaw Productions label in collaboration with Universal Television Alternative Studio (UTAS), this endeavour seeks to rewrite a foundational piece of American history, focusing on alleged contributions and existence of black cowboys on the frontier, and the “forces” that allegedly erased it.

Officially described as: “The untitled black cowboy docuseries will rewrite a foundational piece of American history, unmasking the forces that erased the identity of the black cowboy from frontier history and present. Stories of real cowboys will take viewers on a thrilling odyssey that connects to the heart of the resurgence of Black cowboy culture that we see today across music, art, fashion and film in a three-part series to premiere on Peacock.”
Inspired by themes from Jordan Peele’s movie science fiction movie Nope, which centred on a UFO encounter but hinted at the alleged deep history of black cowboys, this documentary series aims to shed light on the “erasure” of black cowboy identity from historical Wild West accounts. With Keith McQuirter, known for his work on By Whatever Means Necessary: The Godfather of Harlem, serving as show runner, director, and executive producer, the series will pretend to offer a comprehensive exploration of the lives and legacies of black cowboys in the Wild West nobody has ever heard of and very likely never existed.

Jordan Peele isn’t doing his supposed Wild West “documentary” any favours by by using his science fiction film Nope as a springboard for this documentary series.
Furthermore, the involvement of Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, alongside UTAS, in spearheading this project raises questions about the authenticity and integrity of the narrative. Jordan Peele has demonstrated his proclivity for race baiting in his films. By this transition to documentary film making Jordan Peele will attempt to give legitimacy to factual inaccuracy and his irresponsible storytelling, aligning with the sensationalised race baiting style often associated with Peele’s cinematic projects.
The choice to frame the black cowboy series through Jordan Peele’s “singular lens” will limit the diversity of perspectives necessary to comprehensively address the history of the Wild West. By centering the narrative on Peele’s vision, the series will perpetuate a singular, homogenised “white man bad, black man good” perspective.
The statement from Pearlena Igbokwe, Chairman of Universal Studio Group, praising the project as “entertaining” raises concerns about the prioritisation of spectacle over substance. While entertainment value is undoubtedly important in engaging audiences, it should not come at the expense of historical accuracy.
Ultimately Jordan Peele’s endeavour to challenge the alleged whitewashed cowboy mythology, although guaranteed to receive high praise from the mentally challenged critics community and media outlets, will be nothing more than a failed attempt at revisionist history and gas-lighting of audiences.

Pretty sure that Bass Reeves is like the 3rd most famous shootist of the Wild West. History has not been erased.
