I had not idea this was a thing but just discovered there’s a crew running a vintage sci-fi month.
Every month is vintage sci-fi month for me, as when I read, that’s pretty much what I read. I just got finished with reading A.E. Van Vogt’s first novel, Slan, which was originally serialized in 1940 and then published as a full novel in 1946. He started writing sci-fi in 1938, so this is his very early work.
Van Vogt had an interesting career with times where he stopped writing entirely, and many of his later novels are known for being “fix-ups” where he took multiple short stories and fixed them into longer work.
I hadn’t read any of his work prior, as this was a recommendation from Sci-Fi Grand Master John C. Wright as one of his favorite authors. It was worth the read and I’ll do a full review on the youtube channel soon.
But for now, I’m happy to amplify Vintage Sci-Fi month and get some talk going on the subject.
I’ll be reading some Poul Anderson short stories during the month at the very least.
Are you reading anything from the classics? Let’s get this discussion rolling!

I’ve read a few Van Vogt’s (mostly fix-up novels), but I’ve never read Slan. What are your thoughts on it? I’m looking forward to your review, and to hearing your thoughts on the Poul Andersons that you pick up.
welcome aboard!

Followed you over from the #VintageSciFiMonth meme. My first time hearing about the meme, and also first attempt at it.
I just finished with Zelazny’s Lord of Light and trying to pick out my next book. Look forward to reading more about your classic SciFi reads this month!
