The DCEU has found its new Supergirl in rising star Milly Alcock. The House of the Dragon actress will make her superhero debut as Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl, in the highly anticipated 2025 film Superman: Legacy starring David Corenswet as Superman.
“This one is true. Welcome to the DCEU, Milly Alcock!” confirmed DC Studios co-head James Gunn on social media Monday. Alcock will headline the future Supergirl solo movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on Tom King’s comics series.
After Sasha Calle portrayed Supergirl in last year’s The Flash, the DCEU has recast the role with Alcock as part of the fresh reboot under Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran. Her breakout performance as the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has propelled Alcock into the spotlight.
The 22-year-old Australian actress landed the career-defining role of Supergirl after a competitive casting search. According to reports, Alcock beat out contenders like The Winchesters’ Meg Donnelly, Priscilla’s Cailee Spaeny, and CODA’s Emilia Jones; who refused to read for James Gunn as covered here on Fandom Pulse.
Supergirl will be a pivotal character in the new era of DCEU storytelling dubbed Gods and Monsters. She will make her first appearance alongside Corenswet’s Superman in the 2025 tentpole film Superman: Legacy before headlining the solo movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Plot details are scarce, but Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will likely adapt the Tom King comics focusing on Kara Zor-El feeling directionless now that baby cousin Superman is grown and doesn’t need her protection. The story sees Supergirl recruited by an alien seeking revenge against those who destroyed his world.
In Superman: Legacy, Alcock’s Supergirl will join a stacked ensemble cast bringing DC’s biggest heroes to life. David Corenswet stars as Kal-El/Clark Kent alongside Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion).
Alcock’s predecessor Sasha Calle recently told EW she still hopes to play Supergirl again despite the recasting. “I love her deeply! And I think that [The Flash] is really a runway to a bigger story for her,” said Calle last June. “We don’t really get to experience a lot. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, by Tom King, is an incredible comic. I love it. I think it’s so cool. So yeah, I would hope to continue.”
Unfortunately for Calle, the DCEU restart means sweeping changes, including new faces in roles like Supergirl. Still, her cameo appearance in The Flash will allow Calle’s version of Kara Zor-El to still exist in the DCEU multiverse.
As for Milly Alcock, landing such a massive part so early in her career is a dream come true. “I feel like I’m very lucky to have House of the Dragon as my first ever job out of drama school,” the actress told Interview Magazine last year. “It was definitely trial by fire; the best way to learn.” After her breakout as the fierce young Rhaenyra Targaryen, Alcock has won over legions of fans eager to see her talent shine in the DCEU.
Now, Milly Alcock’s trial by fire continues with the DCEU’s Supergirl, a role that could propel her to superstardom akin to Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow also represents a major investment in Alcock as a franchise leader for DC Studios. Here’s hoping she can use some of that super-human strength to carry to DC Studios out of mediocrity.

What are you TALKING about? Highly anticipated??? By whom??

Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, the ONLY cool green lantern.
It’s anticipated by me.
It will either be the first decent thing out of DCEU since…ever, or it’s going to destroy Fillion’s firefly/buffy fanbase forever.
