Doomsday Recon by Ryan Williamson and Jason Anspach has made an auspicious start on Amazon.
The new world of book publishing is truly among the independents, those publishing books on Amazon, serials on Substack and Royal Road, and putting projects on crowdfunding sites. It has an entire ecosystem of creators who have completely bypassed the dying Big 3 megacorp publishers. Those who want something new to read, something entertaining, are quickly turning their attention from the old publishing industry and looking towards the independents.
As rotting apparatuses like WorldCon fall into yet another sexual assault controversy after ignoring repeated warnings about the deceptive CCP, the onslaught of Newpub writers divorced from that old system of corruption and nepotism are busy giving audiences what they want.

One such example is the recently released book Doomsday Recon by authors Ryan Williamson and Jason Anspach (the latter the co-writer of the juggernaut Newpub space franchise Galaxy’s Edge), which has been exploding up the Amazon sales charts despite no backing from the system. As of this writing, it has cracked the Top 7000 on Amazon and shows little signs of slowing down its sales momentum.
The description of Doomsday Recon is as follows:
U.S. Cav Trooper Nephi Bennett’s Humvee went from Panama to hell in the blink of an eye. Now he needs to find his way back home. If he can live that long.
The year is 1989. America has just invaded Noriega’s Panama. And Specialist Bennett’s platoon of Cav Scouts are in country… with, frankly, not a whole lot to do.
Until the freak rainstorm that somehow transports the entire platoon—Humvees, weapons, and all—to another world. A world controlled by a wicked Aztec god.
The Land of the Black Sun.
In a heartbeat, the Scouts find themselves fighting for their lives against savage beasts, witches, zombies, subhuman tribes seeking sacrifices… and even themselves. Fuel runs low, ammo grows scarce, and their only allies are a tribe of all-female warriors and a single fledgling sorceress with a decidedly mean streak.
But the fun has only just begun. Things in the Land of the Black Sun are about to become far more dangerous than Specialist Bennett could have ever imagined. For an ancient evil awaits…
… and Bennett and his fellow Cav troopers will meet it with BLOOD and STEEL
Audiences have clearly responded well to this new series, making it a best seller and cracking the Top 10 in the Military Fantasy section on Amazon in a mere week.

This new blockbuster took the entire writing world by surprise, especially as Amazon’s sales algorithm for attracting new customers and buyers has been broken for some time now, preventing new authors from gaining any traction.
Nonetheless, Doomsday Recon‘s success is undeniable, and it has left audiences clamoring for a sequel, which is on the way. Book Two of Doomsday Recon, Death Or Glory, is set for release on April 22nd, 2024. It is available for preorder as of this writing.
The truth of the matter is that audiences still hunger for adventure, for big worlds and ideas, and a lot of fun along the way. Oldpub, the crumbling system more focused on releasing clunky political diatribes and overwrought lectures disguised as stories, simply cannot compete anymore with the spirit of Newpub. If anyone wants to read a book of imagination and full of exciting action, the only option is among the independents. The old system is irrelevant.
The future of publishing is already here. The gatekeepers can no longer keep the gate shut, and now we are seeing what that leads to with successful projects like Doomsday Recon.
Truly an Iron Age of art and entertainment is here, and it shows absolutely no signs of slowing down.
