Godzilla vs. Charles Barkley, Dark Horse Comics
You’ve seen Godzilla vs. Megalon and Godzilla vs. King Kong twice, but have you read Godzilla vs. Charles Barkley? Mike Barron and Jeff Butler, the iconic duo that created the hit comic Badger, were tasked with bringing this wacky idea to life. Perhaps you’re skeptical of this showdown and think it couldn’t be pulled off, but you couldn’t be more wrong.
This review contains plenty of spoilers, but I don’t believe they will diminish your enjoyment of the book.
The story started with a hook that sucked me right in. A boat just outside California comes across something big, Godzilla, who lifts the ship high into the air before sinking it deep into the ocean. Despite the comic’s ridiculous nature, the King Of The Monsters is still as horrifying as ever.

The story then cuts to a young boy with his grandpa who wants to see Charles Barkley, who is filming a commercial. Security pushes him away, and his grandpa tries to console him with a magic silver dollar.
Then, a lifeguard finds a survivor of the shipwreck. The boy rushes forward, and they see the terrifying monster emerge from the ocean depths. No one knows what to do except the boy, who says the only one who could best the prehistoric Behomouth is the GOAT himself, Charles Barkley.
Now more determined than ever, the boy skillfully evades security by presenting Charles with the magic coin. At first, Charles doesn’t want to help, but after his ego is stroked a bit, he decides to fire his handlers and leave. The boy gives Charles his magic coin, and he grows 300 feet. He challenges Godzilla to a game and beats the lizard soar. After Godzilla displays poor sportsmanship, Chuck takes him to a remote canyon in Utah and says, “Godzilla could play for a second-rate team like the Bulls.” But maybe after some hard training could play for a top-tier team. After hooking Godzilla up with a new set of kicks, Charles shrinks down to his normal size While Godzilla trains with fire in his belly, hoping one day to be as great as Charles.

Charles decides to visit the unnamed boy to return his magic silver dollar. Meanwhile, the boy is arguing with a friend about whether he knows Charles. The friend says he does not know Charles and can’t make a basket. The boy can’t make the bet though, as he gave his only dollar to Charles. To his surprise, Charles shows up, giving him back his dollar, and the boy wins the bet, earning himself a second dollar.
Every character grew in their own way. Godzilla learned to be a better sportsman, the boy finally had his moment with Charles, and Charles became more appreciative of his fans.
This book was essentially a Nike ad. While it will never air on the big screen, a live-action commercial was once released on MTV.
