More game devs are speaking up against wokeness and journalists lacking integrity. This week Thomas Mahler, CEO and Creative Director at Moon Studios, designer and director of Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisps and No Rest for the Wicked gave a scathing reply to woke Gamestar journalist Maurice Weber, after Gamestar journalist Maurice Weber complained about people who are fed up by woke culture. Thomas Mahler’s full reply can be read here.
Thomas Mahler acknowledged that he may get himself into trouble once again by his reply to Gamestar’s Maurice Weber, but says that “it’s especially important these days that we always remind ourselves to try to keep an open mind and try to understand even those who think differently than we do.”
Thomas Mahler pointed out people fed up with woke culture is a reaction against the tendencies of cancel culture and similar movements, reflecting a collective weariness with their excesses. Thomas Mahler said to Gamestar’s Maurice Weber that a journalist, it’s important to adopt a more nuanced perspective, Adding that there’s a concern that Maurice Weber often exhibit a narrow-minded approach, failing to critically examine the situation at hand – a quality typically associated with journalism, and that just because Gamestar’s Maurice Weber hasn’t experienced the repercussions of cancel culture personally doesn’t negate the existence of widespread irrationality in these movements, which persist.
Thomas Mahler quoted Martin Niemöller’s famous statement: ‘First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me,’ pointing out that eventually, cancel culture may affect Gamestar’s Maurice Weber as well. This quote reminds of what Gina Carano said, which got her cancelled by woke cancel pigs at Disney.
Thomas Mahler is far from the only game dev that is fed up with woke culture. Grummz recently disclosed that: “….. there are MORE studio heads, CEOs and Creative Directors who are fed up with what is happening the games industry and with game journalism. They can’t go on record, but they have reached out and let me know (and are taking action in their own studios). We are not alone.”
Thomas Mahler slammed Gamestar’s Maurice Weber saying that woke culture is stifling creativity across the board: “Instead of allowing artists to just be artists, Hollywood and most of the game developers on the West Coast have decided that it’s appropriate to use films and video games as platforms to push their own political agenda. If you argue otherwise, I would expect a journalist like you to back it up with thorough research. Moreover, it’s become the norm to point fingers at others, particularly at those who may think differently from us. Rather than allowing others to be different and listening to them regardless, we attack them outright. It’s frankly eerily reminiscent of old Nazi tactics. Anyone who doesn’t conform is ridiculed, and it’s suggested they be shamed, fired, and have their careers destroyed. This has been the approach over the past few years, and I know plenty of people whose careers have been devastated by trivialities and misinformation, and they continue to suffer today. You seem unaffected, and thus you refuse to consider a more open perspective. Your apparent lack of empathy in this matter is not only unhelpful but also shows a considerable amount of ignorance.

Allow me to also play critic for a moment: At Gamestar, you do the same thing. Instead of cleaning your own house, you wield the ‘We report and earn from our articles, but beware, those guys are the real villains!’ narrative, just to ensure the spotlight never falls on you, aligning yourselves just so.”
Thomas Mahler said that they have cut off Maurice Weber for his and Gamestar’s unacceptable “morally dubious practices.” adding that Maurice Weber and Gamestar lack the initiative to conduct their own journalistic investigations.
Thomas Mahler concluded pointing out that the more outrage Gamestar and Maurice Weber generate, the more clicks they get, and that’s how they make your living, which comes at the expense of others.
Let us know in the comments what you think about Thomas Mahler slamming woke Maurice Weber from Gamestar.

Too late the industry is too far gone the best thing is hope everyone learns to use AI to make games since there’s no money to make anti-woke studios the old way.

Thank you, Thomas Mahler, thank you, thank you…i cannot say this often enough. We do need much more statements like yours.
I was a Gamestar customer some years ago and when all this mess started with male bashing, gender stuff, you name it, i was trying to argue with them, politely, in their forum.
Probably you know what happened, i was banned. Their statement was simple “If you do not support my opinions, you are a toxic male, a racist, a N.. and so forth, maybe all together, whatever you say”. This gamer-newspaper has turned over the years into a left-wing “thing” with a political agenda
Ok, so i canceled my subscription some years ago already and never looked back.
However, i stumbled over the discussion about “Sweet Baby Inc detected” and tried to inform myself, what it was about. So, i found an article at “Gamestar.de” following the same narratives as expected. “Sweet Baby Inc” were saints, the Curator was trying to destroy them and all those, who don’t like wokeness are probably members of reft-wing N…-groups, wow !
As you said, many , many people are fed up with this. it’s too much, it has to stop.
