There are a lot of great comics on Kickstarter as of late, but something eye-catching appeared in the form of a new color production of Billi 99, one of Tim Sale’s earliest works in comics. Presented by Clover Press, a company that’s done some great classic work like a restoration of Terry and the Pirates, this book looks to be a sleeper hit for 2024 for comic collected editions.
Tim Sale was one of the greatest artists in comic books, renowned for his distinctive style and contributions to some of the most iconic stories in the medium. Born on May 1, 1956, Sale’s artistic journey began in the 1970s when he attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City. During this formative period, Sale honed his skills and developed a unique visual language that would come to define his illustrious career.
Sale’s breakout moment came in the 1990s when he collaborated with writer Jeph Loeb on a series of critically acclaimed works, including “Batman: The Long Halloween” and “Superman for All Seasons.” These collaborations began a fruitful partnership that would produce some of the most beloved and influential comic book stories of the modern era. With Sale’s evocative artwork capturing the essence of each character and storyline, the duo’s work resonated with readers and critics alike, earning widespread praise and cementing their status as creative powerhouses.

From his dynamic use of color to his masterful command of composition and storytelling, Sale’s work exhibits a level of craftsmanship and artistry that sets him apart as one of the medium’s true innovators. With an impressive body of work spanning decades and encompassing some of the most beloved characters in pop culture, Tim Sale’s legacy as a comic book artist is nothing short of extraordinary.
Billi 99 came before all of Tim Sale’s acclaimed work with Jeph Loeb, originally a four-part series for Dark Horse comics amounting to 200 pages of greatness that was nominated for three Eisner Awards.

According to the Kickstarter, Tim Sale felt Billi 99 never had a definitive edition. They wanted to work on this, but unfortunately, he passed away before it came to fruition. Clover Press is presenting the book in color for the first time.
With several different editions, including a two-volume slipcase version for Tim Sale fans, Clover Press has a beautiful production on its hands. Comic lovers can rest assured that the project manager, Kurtis Findlay, will do an excellent job, as he’s done great work in color restorations for the classic comic strip, For Better Or Worse. He is also heavily involved in Marvel fandom through the Marvel Epic Collections, where he runs the Epic Marvel Podcast.
Tim Sale’s art deserves beautiful colors, and this edition of Billi 99 looks like a wonderful addition to anyone’s library. It can be backed on Kickstarter here.
