Warhammer 40K fans have been putting heavy pressure on Games Workshop this last week after introducing female Custodes to the game. Despite the fact that female Custodes never existed, Games Workshop employees lied to customers by posting about the situation and claiming it had always been that way. Now, fans are reacting negatively to a promotional video about Adeptus Custodes lore on the official Warhammer YouTube Channel.
Perhaps more than any fandom, Warhammer 40,000 fans are particular about their game’s lore. With hundreds of novels, codexes, and comics spanning nearly 40 years of content, the editors have taken great care to make sure there’s a cohesive world for Warhammer 40K. When someone changes it, it’s beyond offensive to those who have invested thousands of dollars into this property.
Games Workshop challenged fans of the game over a week ago by introducing female Custodes into the lore. There have been rumors that Amazon had a hand in this, wanting to change the setting for their forthcoming show being developed by Henry Cavill—who himself is an Adeptus Custodes fan. It’s sparked more than one rumor about him having a fight with Amazon over the Games Workshop sci-fi property.
During the last week, Games Workshop stock has dropped following a massive sell-off by the company’s current outgoing CFO, and yet the mainstream media tried to play this situation off as a few radical disgruntled fans were making a lot of noise. Several gaming websites came to the rescue of the current iteration of Warhammer 40K, urging gamers to shut up, calling them bigots, and finally, when it reached the level of the Guardian, pretending like no one was criticizing the change in the lore.
Much of the silence about the female Custodes is because Games Workshop has been banning and blocking anyone who criticizes their choices from their various social media pages. The official Reddit is silencing those who are critical of the recent woke choices as well.

Oddly, during this whole situation, Games Workshop decided to make a promotional video on the topic titled Faction Focus: Adeptus Custodes. This video is a three-minute primer on the personal bodyguards of the God-Emperor. It shows various imagery from the codexes intertwined with some video overlayed by some lore about the faction.
The video makes no mention of the female iteration of the custodians, but it does mention the Sisters of Silence—a point many gamers bring up as to why there’s no need for female Adeptus Custodes to begin with.
However, the most interesting part of this video is the fan reaction, as hundreds of Warhammer 40K fans are leaving negative comments, and if you have a plugin to see the dislikes on YouTube (Google removed it from standard features) you can see the video is getting heavily ratioed by Warhammer 40K fans.
As of this writing the video has about 2.9K likes to a whopping 9K dislikes. Fans are rejecting Games Workshop’s promotional material and want the company to respect their lore.
What do you think of the ratioing of the Games Workshop promotional video on Adeptus Custodes from Warhammer 40K? Leave a comment and let us know.
